SD

The primary function of the SD is to aggregate all server-facing ports, provide minimal traffic processing, and forward the remaining traffic to the AD for further processing. By the nature of the JFDC design, the SD is very lightweight because of the limited number of functions it is required to perform. The idea is that if a SD doesn’t natively support an advanced feature, it can simply forward the traffic to the AD for advanced processing instead. The end result is that all advanced features on the AD are extended to all SDs, even if the SDs do not natively support the advanced features; this is because the AD treats the SDs as a simple port extender using the IEEE 802.1BR header.

The SD is running a very small version of Linux instead of the full version of the Junos network operating system. This is because it only needs to forward traffic based on IEEE 802.1BR metadata as opposed to running a bunch of routing protocols. There is a special software package that you must install on each SD. This software package includes a small version of Linux with a minimal networking stack that lets it speak IEEE 802.1BR, NETCONF, and LLDP.

You can use the following devices as an SD for JFDC:
